FIA to grill NAB deputy head on graft allegations

ISLAMABAD - Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) would question the deputy head of country’s top anti-corruption watchdog - NAB - to ascertain the veracity of allegations of corruption and fraudulent practices against him

The FIA Islamabad Zone has summoned Deputy Chairman NAB Imtiaz Tajwar on November 14 to face allegations of misappropriation during his stint as acting chairman NADRA, an FIA official confirmed.

However, the development is being considered a rare one as a deputy chairman NAB is facing the inquiry of another anti-corruption watchdog of the country - FIA.

According to FIA sources, deputy chairman NAB is facing probe for getting a house loan amounting to Rs5.6 million, making 646 recruitments and purchase of medicines and other equipment in violation of rules while he was the acting chairman NAB.

He is also facing investigations of making recruitments on contract and daily wages for different projects of NADRA in violation of rules. NADRA has provided all official record in connection with the misappropriations and we are investigating the case on the directions of Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, the official said.

The official sources in NADRA said that incumbent Chairman NADRA Usman Yousaf Mubeen was reluctant to provide all the relevant record to the Ministry of Interior and FIA against deputy chairman NAB but one of his deputies did so on the instructions of the ministry. The official sources further said that the chairman NADRA was reluctant because of the position of Imtiaz Tajwar.

Tajwar was working as additional secretary at the Ministry of Interior when he was made acting chairman NADRA following resignation of his predecessor Tariq Malik in January 2014 and remained posted at this position for around a year.

On October 31, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, while chairing NADRA Board meeting, had directed the FIA to hold investigations against the deputy chairman, the spokesman of the Interior Ministry had said after the meeting.
