Orangi bleeds after MQM workers murder

KARACHI - Two workers of MQM among six were gunned down, while more than a dozen sustained bullet wounds in a gun battle geared up after the killing of Muttahida Qaumi Movement workers in different parts of Orangi Town. According to details, violence gripped the area after the killings of two activists of MQM in separate incidents. Orangi Town and adjacent areas echoed with gunshots. The majority of the victims were non-combatants while the most affected areas included Aligarh Colony, Qasba Mor, Qasba Colony, Bukhari Colony, Kali Pahari, Kati Pahari, Banaras, Islam Chowk, Mohajir Chowk, Mominabad and Pirabad. Residents of the area informed that the armed men roaming on the streets without any fear of apprehension, having positions in uphill areas and showering bullets. Police said that violence broke out when armed men targeted and killed a man named Shafiq Ahmed Qureshi, son of Zaheer Ahmed who was affiliated with All Pakistan Mutahida Student Organisation, a student wing of MQM. His body was taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital and later handed over to his family. Later, miscreants restored indiscriminate firing in various parts of Orangi. The routine and commercial activities as well as vehicular traffic got suspended in the affected areas. During the violence, another worker of MQM sub-organisation Mutahida Organising Committee (MOC) was gunned down within the jurisdiction of Pirabad Police Station. The victim was identified as Akbar, son of Sultan. Following the murder of another MQM worker violence boosted up and turning into ethnic violence and claimed four more lives and injured several others. Three more persons named Adeel Dilawar, Abdul Ghaffor and Ashfaq Yaqoob were succumbed to their injuries during treatment at Abbasi Shaheed Hosptial while one Faiz Mohammad died in Civil Hospital while the injured were admitted to ASH. The injured included Alamgir, 25, son of Mujahid, Abdul Ghaffar, 35, son of Wakeel, Roshan Ali, 22, son of Ghulam Hussain, Saad, 25, son of Nawaz were admitted to the ASH. DSP Majeeb Abbas said that the police was trying to control the law and order situation. He said that it was the ethnic violence that claimed at least six lives and injured several others. He said that the nothing could be said about the political affiliations or ethnicities of the victims killed and injured in the violence and the details were being gathered. Witnesses said that as the news of violence spread, the residents of Orangi tried to reach home but miscreants targeted them which increased casualties of non-combatants. Passers-by, commuters and other innocents have been targeted by the miscreants. Heavy contingents of police rushed to control the law and order situation. Meanwhile, six including an activist of ANP were gunned down in different incidents of violence here on Monday. According to details, an activist of ANP was shot dead in Malir in the remits of Malir City Police Station.
