SC adjourns hearing

ISLAMABAD The apex court has adjourned hearing of a case regarding alleged Rs 7 billion embezzlement in allotment of plots in Sectors I-11 and I-12 of the Federal Capital. However, notices have been served on the Capital Development Authority Chairman, the Punjab Additional Advocate General, Inspector General of Police Islamabad and others. Its worth mentioning here that the apex court had taken suo moto notice on a news report alleging that the officials of the Capital Development Authority (CDA) had embezzled Rs 7 billion in allotment of the plots in two sectors. A three-member bench comprising Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Justice Ghulam Rabbani and Justice Khalilur Rehman Ramday could not resume hearing, as the courts time was over. On previous hearing, the court directed the CDA to submit a comprehensive report over the issue and prepare a list of 240 genuine affected persons. Counsel for CDA Tariq Mehmood had informed the court that land was acquired for Sector I-11 in 1969 and for I-12 in 1966-67. In compliance with the court orders, the CDA approached 240 affected persons and offered them plots at an alternative place. However; now the affected persons claimed that they were actually 1,143 instead of 240. He contended that the affected villagers of Sarian and Bokra were creating hurdles for the CDA in the development of these sectors. According to the news report, the CDA in connivance with police had registered a fake case against the locals, who were denied plots in the new award of compensation against their land acquired by the authority. The editor of the newspaper had also asserted that the news was based on genuine facts and figures whereas the police officials stated that all the cases were genuine.
