Sartaj to represent Pakistan at Heart of Asia conference

Amid skirmishes along the Line of Control (LoC) and Working Boundary, Adviser on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz will represent Pakistan at the Heart of Asia conference.

The Heart of Asia conference will be held during the first week of December in Amritsar, India.

“The conference is of immense importance with regard to peace and stability in Afghanistan,” Sartaj told reporters after his meeting with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

The adviser had confirmed in October, Pakistan’s participation in the conference, few days after India pulled out of the Saarc summit which was scheduled to be held in November.

India’s refusal to attend the Saarc summit came days after several armed men stormed an Indian Army camp in Uri sector of held Kashmir and killed at least 19 soldiers.

Following the attack, India claimed to have conducted a cross-border 'surgical strike' against 'launch pads of terror' in Azad Kashmir - a claim Pakistan has strongly rejected.

Islamabad maintains New Delhi is attempting to divert the world's attention away from atrocities committed by government forces in Indian-held Kashmir.

Regular border skirmishes between the two nuclear-armed neighbours have alarmed world bodies, with the United Nations urging both the governments of Pakistan and India to exercise restraint and resolve all their issues through dialogue.

Pakistan and India have locked horns over the Kashmir issue since Indian forces stepped up a crackdown against protesters after Hizbul Mujahideen commander, Burhan Wani, was killed by government forces in July.
