Levies man killed in attack on polio team

A personal of Bajaur levies force was gunned down when unknown armed persons attacked a polio vaccination team in the border area of Tehsil Mamond in Bajaur tribal region on Monday morning.

Locals and officials of the political administration of Bajaur said that the team of polio workers was on vaccination campaign in the Kalan area 30 Km from the agency headquarter Khar when unidentified gunmen opened fire on it.

Assistant Political Agent Bajaur Sohil Ahmad Khan told the media that Akbar Khan, personal of Bajaur levies force, who was escorting the immunisation team was killed on the spot while the health workers remained safe in the attack.

After the shooting, the attackers escaped from the site of the incident. Just after the incident, locals, volunteers of peace committees and officials of Bajaur levies force reached the site and cordoned off the area and started search operation.

An official of the administration said that at least five suspected persons had been arrested in the search operation conducted by Bajaur levies force and volunteers of peace committees in various spot of tehsil Mamond. "We have launched an investigation of the incident and so for five persons that could be involved in the attack have been arrested in the search operation," the official added.

Later on, the detained persons were shifted to Khar for further investigation. No one has claimed responsibility for the attack on polio team but the administration accused the militants of the shooting.
