Cross border fire in Bajaur Agency leaves one dead

PESHAWAR- Cross-border firing near Pakistan-Afghanistan border in Bajaur Agency this morning has left at least one person dead.

The person died in the firing was a civilian. The incident took place when couple of mortar shells were fired from Afghanistan and landed in a house in Charmang Valley. The attack also left the house damaged. Reports say that mortars were fired by the militants, targeting the Pakistani territory.

Attacks by banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) frequently carry out attacks in the region on civilians as well as security forces. The western part of Pakistan’s tribal areas, especially Mohmand and Bajaur agencies bordering Afghanistan's Kunar and Nuristan provinces, have faced cross-border militant attacks in the past. Bajaur, a tribal region in Pakistan’s Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata), is governed by tribal laws.

An extremist insurgency led by the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) plagues the region and the area is known to be infested with militants, including those from Al Qaeda and other armed extremist organizations.
