"Violence devours another five


KARACHI – At least five people were killed in separate incidents of violence in different city neighbourhoods on Saturday.
A private security guard committed suicide after wounding his wife and nephew in Jut Lines area in the limits of the Brigade Police Station in the morning.
Police officials said the incident took place when Naveed Rafiq, 32, returned from his workplace. He had an altercation with his wife Samina, 22 and opened fire at her. As a result of the firing, his nephew Waqar, 9, was also injured with gunshot wounds. After shooting his wife, Naveed shot himself dead. The injured, Samina and Waqar, were taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre. Both the injured did not give any statement. The deceased belonged to Chakwal. The couple didn’t have any child.
Separately, a young man was killed by unidentified persons in Orangi Town. The victim was identified as Noman Bashir, 30. The body was shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for medico-legal formalities.
SHO Asif Rauf said it could over a family dispute, as some weeks back, the victim’s wife had died and his in-laws were suspecting Noman’s involvement in her death. On Saturday morning, Noman was going to meet his brother-in-law Imran when the killing took place.
Separately, a bus conductor was killed allegedly by a couple in Manghopir area. The incident took place in Gulzarabad area where Mahasil Khan was shot by one Ayaz Khan and his wife Taskeen.  Following the incident, Ayaz Khan fled the scene. His wife was detained for questioning. She said that her husband had taken a loan of Rs 60,000 from Mahisal, but couldn’t pay back on time.
In another incident, a contractor was killed by armed bandits in the limits of the precincts of the Sharafi Goth Police Station. The incident took place in Ismail Panwar Goth, where Atta Muhammad was shot by two suspects during a snatching bid. Following the incident, the suspects were chased down by the area people. They were so severely beaten that they fainted. A police party rushed and shifted them to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre. They were identified as Saeedullah and Sohail.
Meanwhile, a fruit vendor, 45-year-old Abdul Jabbar, was shot dead in Muzaffar Taj Colony in the limits of the Korangi Police Station. Unidentified gunmen, riding a motorcycle, opened fire at him. He received three bullets and died on the spot. The body was shifted to the JPMC for medico-legal formalities. Police officials said the victim was a resident of Awami Colony.
Separately, six people were wounded when two bike-borne armed duos opened fire at a tea stall in PIB Colony near Askari Park. The injured were identified as Ali Nawaz, Javed, Shahid, Aslam Zeeshan and three-year-old Ahmed Hussain. Police shifted them to a private hospital.
After the incident, tension engulfed PIB Colony and its surrounding areas.
Altaf demands probe into Bhoja plane crash: Muttahida Qaumi Movement chief Altaf Hussain on Saturday demanded President Asif Zardari and Prime Minister Gilani to order a high-level inquiry into the Bhoja plane crash and make the findings public.
Hussain said the plane crash was a national tragedy, in which 127 people perished. He said that performance of the national flag carrier was already deteriorating and such accidents of private airlines had raised a question mark over the performance of the Civil Aviation Authority.
The MQM chief said that it was a national issue of utmost importance and must be thoroughly investigated from every perspective. He said those found guilty of dereliction be penalised.
Hussain further said that private airlines should be made to follow the rules and regulations of the CAA and no leniency be shown. He extended heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved families, saying the MQM shared their grief and sorrow. He also prayed for the eternal peace of the departed souls.
