Talks for interim setup underway

ISLAMABAD – The PPP leadership has started consulting the leaders of coalition partners on the caretaker setup and the date for dissolution of the assemblies in the middle of the next month. On the other hand, Leader of Opposition in National Assembly Ch Nisar Ali Khan is also busy meeting the heads of opposition parties, both within and outside the Parliament to revisit the earlier shortlisted names of candidates for a caretaker prime minister.Sources in both the government and opposition told The Nation that almost all the stakeholders agreed on the early dissolution of the assemblies. They also agree on dissolution of the National and provincial assemblies on the same day and holding of elections for the National and provincial assemblies the same day.The sources further said the current session of the National Assembly would be the last working session and a farewell session of the National Assembly might be called in the mid February to formally announce the dissolution of the National Assembly. The sources hinted at a tacit understanding between PPP and PML-N leaders, adding both the parties had been in contact through some moderate elements from both the parties for quite some time.Meanwhile, the sources close to PML-N told The Nation that Ch Nisar was not in favour of meaningful consultation with Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf on the caretaker premier and would let the matter go to the eight-member parliamentary committee to be formed by the speaker with equal representation from the treasury and the opposition to decide the matter, but as both the sides would be having equal strength in the body, the matter would eventually go to the chief election commissioner for final decision. However, the whole exercise can be avoided if the lists of the treasury and the opposition carry some common name for the slot of a caretaker prime minister. The sources further revealed that earlier, Ch Nisar had shortlisted the names of Justice(retd) Shakirullah Jan and Justice(retd) Nasir Aslam Zahid in consultation with the opposition parties, but Justice(retd) Shakirullah Jan has recently retired and has not completed two years of retirement period, which is mandatory for the slot. So PML-N may include the name of Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PKMAP) Chief Mahmood Khan Achakzai. The fresh consultation is mainly aimed at getting clearance of his name from the opposition parties.Interestingly, there is a strong likelihood that the two-member list of the ruling alliance would also include the name of Mahmood Khan Achakzai as it was the persuasion of Syed Khursheed Shah, Senator Raza Rabbani and some other PPP leaders that he (Achakzai) agreed to accept the role in the caretaker setup in the larger interest of democracy.
