Police, ZTBL officials 'torture journalists

ISLAMABAD Five journalists of a private television channel and a renowned newspaper got serious injured when they were attacked by Zarai Taraqiati Bank Ltd (ZTBL) security and Islamabad police officials on Wednesday. Following the incident, Interior Minister Rehman Malik suspended SHO Aabpara Police Station and ordered DC Islamabad to submit report over the issue within 24 hours. The scuffle occurred when EOBI officials along with court staff appeared at ZTBL for acceptance of court warrant for non-payment of Rs 80 million to EOBI. The Security Incharge of ZTBL Col (Retd) Manzoor refused to accept any order and tattered the court warrant. Cameraman Zifat Abbasi, Reporter Wasim Malik, Reporter Sadaqat Ali of a private television channel and Mirza Asif, cameraman, and Samar Abbas, reporter of a renowned newspaper were there for coverage. The police along with the security officials and employees of ZTBL brutally tortured the journalists and seriously injured them. They were later shifted to PIMS in critical conditions. Information Minister Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan, soon after the incident, visited PIMS and ensured the journalists that the persons involved would be punished. Similarly, Rehman Malik suspended the SHO Aabpara Abid Ikrama and asked the DC Islamabad to submit detailed report of the incident within 24 hours. Police sources confirmed that Manzoor and two other persons were arrested and FIR was logged against them for illegally detaining journalists and torturing them. It would be relevant to mention here that ASP Faisal Memon of city circle was present in ZTBL at the time of scuffle. The authorities however did not take any action against him so far. Talking to TheNation, SP city M Ilyas said that action would be taken against the ZTBL and the police officials involved in the incident. He said the police high-ups looked into the issue and the persons would be given due punishment. He said there was no justification to torture the media persons who were there to do their jobs. He assured that the police officials involved would be punished for their act. APP adds that Minister for Information and Broadcasting Firdous Ashiq Awan informed the National Assembly on Wednesday that judicial inquiry had been ordered into the torturing. Orders have also been issued for registration of FIRs against the accused, she added. We condemn the incident from floor of the House and regret it, she said adding that a deadline of 24 hours had been given to the local administration to recover equipments of media persons. Appreciating cooperation of journalists organisation, ZTBL and local administration, she said the issue had been resolved conditionally with the assurance of Interior Minister Rehman Malik for holding judicial inquiry and lodging FIRs against those involved in the case.
