ISLAMABAD - Taking strong notice of Rehman Malik’s absence in the contempt matter the Supreme Court on Thursday observed that contempt case against the Federal Interior Minister has been lingering on since the last three years but he is not taking it seriously.A three-member bench comprising Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry comprising Justice Jawwad S Khawaja and Justice Khilji Arif Hussain heard the contempt case against Rehman Malik.The Chief Justice said that Rehman Malik filed three applications regarding the matter pending before the court and instead of seeking apology has given the explanation in them. He said that the Interior Minister was taking no interest in the case, while they have to conclude it.Chaudhry Azhar, counsel of the Federal Interior Minister, informed the court his client is abroad and due to non-availability of the flight could not come back on Thursday. Justice Jawwad S Khawaja asked the learned counsel that on the last hearing you had requested to fix September 26th for hearing but today is 27th.The learned counsel said that there was problem in getting the flight. He requested the bench to adjourn the hearing for a week as he himself not feeling well. The Chief Justice said if you people would not respect the courts then how would it function?.The court on the request of Rehman Malik’s counsel adjourned the hearing till October 1st, 2012. A three-member bench on May 16th in its judgment on Pakistan Steel Mills had noted that Rehman Malik interfered in the case and transferred former FIA DG Tariq Khosa in December 2009. The court had issued him another notice. The bench had earlier rejected Malik’s reply on the show-cause and had decided to frame charge against him.FIA chief Tariq Khosa was investigating the corruption in Steel Mills case. The team members were making progress in the probe when Investigation Officer (Tariq Khosa) was transferred.
