QUETTA - Renowned nuclear scientist Dr Samar Mubarakmand said on Wednesday Balochistan has won the Reko Diq case in the International Court of Justice (ICJ), and thus the provincial government will now implement the project. “First of all work will begin on the ores, where 2.2 billion tonnes of gold deposits worth $400 billion exist,” the scientist said in a briefing to Balochistan Governor Nawab Zulfiqar Ali Magsi.Dr Mubarakmand said the Geological Survey of Pakistan had explored the Reko Diq reserves in 1978, while in 1993 an agreement was reached with an Australian company Tethyan, but this had come to an end now. He said that under the project, as many as 15,000 tonnes of raw material, worth $411 million, would be excavated annually and the provincial government would earn an annual profit of $321 million from it. The provincial government, he added, had allocated Rs1,400 million for the project, whereas the water supply for it would only cost Rs1,980 million and would be completed within one-and-a-half year. He said that local people would be recruited to non-technical positions for the project. Speaking on the occasion, Governor Magsi stressed an earlier execution of the works on the project, so that the masses could benefit from it.He said he had directed the chief secretary and finance secretary to ensure provision of funds for the project. He also stressed that local people should be provided more and more jobs and the project offices s should be established in Quetta instead of Islamabad. He also directed the authorities concerned to ensure foolproof security for the project.Balochistan Chief Secretary Babar Yaqoob Feteh Muhammad, Commander Southern Command Lieutenant-General Muhammad Alam Khattak, Frontier Constabulary IG Major-General Ubaidullah Khan, the additional chief secretary (development), personal secretary to the governor, finance secretary, mines and minerals secretary and Balochistan Gold, Copper Project managing director were also present on the occasion.
