PPP can take to streets on Panama Leaks, says Kursheed

ISLAMABAD - Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Syed Khursheed Shah yesterday said the Pakistan People’s Party could take to streets if the government failed to resolve the Panama Leaks issue.

His comments came after Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf Chief Imran Khan threatened the government of mass protest campaign after Eid. Imran Khan vowed to bring millions on the roads against the government.

Shah was in Dubai recently to meet his leader Asif Ali Zardari to brief him over the Panama Leaks scandal amidst deadlock in formation of joint Terms of References by 12-member parliamentary committee.

A parliamentary committee formed to finalise the ToR for the Panama leaks investigation failed to come up with results when its deadline expired last week.

Khurshid Shah told reporters here that the PPP will finalise its strategy if the negotiations with the government over the Panama Leaks scandal failed.

He said: “The PPP does not want politics of roads, however, the party can take to streets if the matter is not resolved in the parliament. The government must accept opposition’s ToRs,” he added.

Shah said the deadlock still persisted in talks between the government and opposition parties over formulation of Terms of Reference for proposed Panama Papers commission. “The deadlock still exists and it doesn’t seem to be ending soon. The government should not waste time anymore,” he said.

He assured the government that his party wanted to resolve the issue amicably. “The government can’t ignore everything calling it a conspiracy. The PM has himself assured that he and his family members are ready for accountability,” he added. Shah criticised the ruling party for ignoring Sindh in federal budget and development projects. “Sindh is running the entire country with its revenue but it could not have a motorway so far,” he added.

Earlier yesterday, Federal Minister of Information Pervez Rashid met with Khurshid Shah to discuss the appointment of the members of Election Commission of Pakistan.

Shah said the matter regarding the appointment of ECP members should be resolved at the earliest as a number of important cases shall be left unheard during the absence of key members.

Khurshid Shah suggested that Imran Zafar Laghari should be made a member of the parliamentary committee dealing with the matter instead of Ayaz Sumro. Hearing of key cases, including the one related to Captain Mohammed Safdar’s assets, PTI’s funds, Speaker NA Ayaz Sadiq’s case against PTI’s affidavits and irregularities in election campaigns, shall be suspended for indefinite time period as a result of the retirement of ECP members.
