Norwegian FM on visit to pacify Pakistanis

ISLAMABAD In a bid to restore the image of his country among Pakistanis after a Norwegian newspaper published much condemned blasphemous caricatures of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), Foreign Minister of Norway Jonas Gahr Store is currently on a visit to Pakistan. Bilateral relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan have been improved significantly since the signing of the Joint Declaration on January 6, 2009, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi told his Norwegian counterpart during a meeting here on Wednesday. Qureshi said Pakistan was extensively engaged in the reconstruction and development work in Afghanistan. Foreign Minister Qureshi conveyed the sentiments of the people of Pakistan about the reproduction of blasphemous cartoons in Norway and told his Norwegian counterpart to stop any such publishing in future, sources privy to the meeting told TheNation. Freedom of expression should be based on respect for one anothers religious feelings and sentiments, Qureshi added. According to a press release issued by the Foreign Office, Qureshi discussed in detail a wide range of bilateral and regional issues with his Norwegian counterpart. Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir and the Ambassador of Norway to Pakistan Robert Kvile also attended the meeting. Qureshi underlined the need for speeding up the process of reconstruction and development in Malakand region and FATA in order to achieve a decisive victory against militants and extremists. He said that Pakistan went to recently-held Foreign Secretary-level meeting in New Delhi on February 25 with an open mind. Pakistan wanted its relations with India to normalise by resolving the bilateral disputes through a stained and meaningful dialogue process. Engaging in talks for the sake of talks will serve no purpose, Qureshi said underlining that India should change its approach towards Pakistan. The Foreign Minister reiterated Pakistans position that Pakistan would be ready to contribute in whatever way the Government of Afghanistan wished it to do so. The Foreign Minister said that it was important not to forget over 3 million Afghan refugees living in Pakistan in the integration process.
