Haj scam lands at Interior Ministry

ISLAMABAD - The Haj scam has also landed at the Ministry of Interior after Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), probing the mega corruption scandal, has issued notices to some 248 persons including journalists and politicians who performed free Haj on the recommendations of Interior Minister. The sources in FIA informed that Interior Minister Rehman Malik would make headlines in next few days, as actually during early investigations, it has transpired that he was the facilitator of these persons who had performed Haj last year. It might be possible that the money on account of providing accommodations to these special pilgrims in Makkah and Madinah might be recovered from Minister of Interior Rehman Malik, the sources disclosed. The matter came into the notice of FIA after the Ministry of Interior had refused to pay the bills worth hundred of thousands of Saudi Riyals of Ministry of Religious Affairs that it had to incur for the accommodation and transportation charges of these pilgrims during their stay in Makkah and Madinah. The sources in the agency disclosed that FIA has clubbed the matter with the previous case regarding embezzlement of money in renting out buildings in Saudi Arabia and other mismanagement in Haj affairs. After the refusal of the Ministry of Interior to pay these outstanding dues of the Ministry of Religious Affairs, the ministry (Religious Affairs) is intended to recover the money from those politicians, journalists and their family members who performed free Haj. FIA in this regard has issued notices to all these persons for their appearance before the investigators. The sources in FIA disclosed that a lump sum amount of Rs 85,000 would be recovered from each person. However, some of the journalists who have yet to appear before FIA team have decided to raise finger towards Interior Minister Rehman Malik for the recovery of money as they are claiming that they had gone to perform Haj on the invitation of the Interior Minister.
