Pak diplomat meets Aafia Siddiqui

NEW YORK - A senior Pakistani Embassy diplomat, who met with Aafia Siddqui in the Brooklyn detention center on Saturday, assured her that the embassy would make all possible efforts to ensure that her rights as an under-trial prisoner were respected. Counsellor Faqir Syed Asif Hussain had 2-1/2-hour meeting with Ms Siddiqui after United States authorities allowed him consular access to the detainee. One of her attorneys, Gideon Oliver, and a representative of US authorities were also present during his meeting with Ms Siddique, who is being held without bail after being charged with attempting to kill FBI agents and other US personnel last month while in Afghan custody. Her bail hearing is set for Monday. Responding to the demands she raised, Asif Hussain told The Nation that the embassy would try and ensure that she was not discriminated against and that she was provided appropriate medical treatment to care for her injuries. In response to her concerns, he said the embassy would make efforts to do every thing possible so that her trial was just, fair and transparent and that her rights as a prisoner were respected. She also demanded that she be provided halal food and a copy of the Holy Quran and local timings for prayers as well as a good female doctor. Hussain said he conveyed these demands to the US authorities who promised to provide these facilities to her. Hussain said she voiced her concern over her three US-born children and her mother. At the start of the meeting, he said Ms Siddiqui looked bewildered and depressed but as the conversation proceeded she gain some confidence and felt a little better. Regarding charges against her, she did not confide to the counsellor anything on the advice of her attorney.
