Karachi tense as 3 MQM men killed

KARACHI - Gunmen killed a senior activist of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) along with two others in Mehmoodabad in fresh incident of target killing on Tuesday, stoking another wave of tension in the area. Calling it targeted killing, police said the MQM Mehmoodabad sector committee member Asif Ali was sitting along with the two sympathisers Munir Ahmed and Muhammad Naeem when four armed motorcyclists reached the spot and fired indiscriminate shots at them, wounding them critically. The injured were taken to Jinnah Hospital where they died, said forensic officer of the hospital. The bodies were handed over to their heirs. The deceased were employees of the Water Board and Fire Brigade. Meanwhile, the MQM condemned the murder of its sector head and well-wishers, demanding arrest of the killers and calling upon the provincial government to take notice of target killings in the city. INP adds: The targeted killing stoked violent protests, sparking another wave of tension when angry protesters blocked the roads and shut down all the markets and business centres in and around the area. They pelted stones at vehicles and chanted slogans against target killing. The law enforcers reached the spot and cordoned off the entire area besides enhancing patrol. Separately, gunmen torched two buses on fire in Landhi. According to sources, armed men forcefully vacated a passenger bus and torched it in Sherpao Colony of Landhi. Similarly, another bus was set ablaze at Quaidabad Poultry Stop. Though police along with fire-fighters rushed to the site to extinguish the fire, the vehicles were damaged completely when they reached the spot. According to sources, these incidents were the reaction of the killings of political leader on Shaheed-e-Milat Road the other day when unknown attackers killed Akhtar Hussain, a politician, and his friend Abdul Karim belonging to Afaq Ahmed Group of Muhajir Qaumi Movement.
