Body okays DHA Bill; 'N' dissents

ISLAMABAD Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) Thursday opposed the Defence Housing Authority Islamabad Bill, 2007 which was approved by the majority members of the National Assembly Standing Committee for Defence. PML-N members Ayaz Amir and Begum Ishrat Ashraf opposed the bill arguing that DHA did need parliament act to function as a housing society. They were of the view that purpose of seeking act of parliament was to deny the owners of small land holdings of the area in the name of defence. The committee that met with Dr Azra Fazal in the chair decided the matter through voting in which majority of the members gave their nod in favour of the draft bill. The committee also discussed the Pakistan Army Amendment Bill 2007 and regularization of services of honorary female teachers working in Federal Government Cantt and Garrisons Schools. The Committee decided to postpone its deliberations on the Pakistan Army (Amendment) Bill 2007 till a detailed briefing by Barrister Aitzaz Ahsan and Latif Afridi Advocate since the draft bill entails issues relating to the fundamental rights. As regards regularization of services of the lady teachers working in the schools of the Ministry of Defence, the Secretary Defence said that he has no objection provided sufficient funds were allocated by the government. He maintained that more than 1200 lady teachers have been working in this category with some serving for the last 22 years.
