Military chiefs agree on surgical strikes

ISLAMABAD - Pakistan and the US military command have agreed to act against militant sanctuaries at respective sides of Pak-Afghan border while disagreement over Haqqanis presence in North Waziristan Agency still persists. As per a reported agreement reached during the meetings of the top military and intelligence brass of both the states, the US and Nato troops would not initiate any ground operations in Pakistani tribal areas. Pakistan would hold crackdowns against the militants but it would not launch a direct or full-scale military offensive in NWA. Both the countries would resume intelligence cooperation between Pakistans Inter-Services Intelligence and American Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) for hunting down the militants at both sides of the border. They wont cross border. They have agreed on resuming intelligence cooperation, according to intelligence sources. Separate reported meetings of Pakistan Army chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani and ISI Director General Lieutenant General Ahmad Shuja Pasha with US Army chief General Raymond T Odierno and CIA chief General David Petraeus were held in last couple of days. Cross-borer intelligence cooperation had disrupted after the US and Nato had deployed troops at Afghanistans Khost city that borders NWA, for target identification of militants. Militants target identification was previously being done by ISI. The development followed a large-scale operation against militants in Khost, Paktia, Kunar and Nuristan. In the story Amassed Nato troops wont cross border TheNation had quoted military sources as saying that the US and Nato troops would not enter Pakistani territory and these troops were deployed for militant targets identification in the wake of US mistrust on Pakistani security and intelligence agencies, that, the US believed, were aiding Haqqanis. The differences over Haqqani network sanctuaries still persist between both the sides. Pakistan Army is adamant that Haqqani network is not based in NWA, contending that the militant network has roots in Afghanistans Kunar and Nuristan provinces. As an evident counter narrative strategy, Pakistan lately accused Nato of failing to act against Afghan militants and Taliban like Fazlullah who are involved in terrorism on Pakistani soil. The recent crackdowns of Nato in Kunar and Nuristan have exerted pressure on Pakistan to act on its part. Pakistans military has agreed to launch crackdowns on the militants but contends that it is not in a position to launch a full-scale operation at the moment. Enhanced US surgical strikes and drone attacks in NWA through intelligence cooperation have also been agreed upon. Paktia government spokesperson Roohullah Samon told TheNation that dozens of militants were either killed, arrested or went in hiding as a result of the joint operation initiated by the US, Nato and Afghan forces against the militants in Khost, Paktia, Kunar and Nuristan. Many have died, captured or are on run now, he said. In a related development, Pakistan deployed additional troops in Khyber Agencys Bara region to launch a crackdown on militants. The military declined to provide any details about the operation but Secretary (Security) Fata (Federally Administered Tribal Areas), Law and Order Department, Captain (r) Tariq Hayat Khan said that the operation was likely to be completed this week. He quoted official figures suggesting the killings of nearly 70 militants and three Pakistan army personnel in the military offensive. I met some senior military officials and my information suggests that most part of Bara would be cleared by this week. Khan refused to share any other details about the operation, saying, Its a sensitive matter.
