More monsoon rains from Monday

ISLAMABAD While 68 people in Punjab and 292 in Khyber Pakhtunkha have died due to flood situation, another monsoon weather system is developing over India, which is likely to move towards Pakistan and may cause further monsoon rains in Sindh and Punjab between 2nd to 4th August. This was informed during a press conference held at PID. After 1929 this was the worst flood in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and rescue and relief efforts are underway to evacuate stranded people, said Minister of State for Information Samsam Ali Bokhari addressing a press conference. He was flanked by Chairman NDMA Lt Gen (r) Nadeem and DG meteorological office Qamar uz Zaman. Giving the flood situation, the Minister of State informed that Indus was in high flood. River Jhelum is in high flood but under control and Chanab is receding, Samsam said adding that Nowshera, Chakdara and Thakot link bridges have been badly damaged. He said that around 292 people have died in the flood situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. About 9 lakh cusec water flow will cross from Sukkur barrage and all arrangements have been made to avoid any untoward situation, he informed. Taking measures to handle flood situation, Samsam said, Prime Minister has asked Ministry of Communication to restore road network on war footing and Ministry of Water and Power to restore electricity in affected areas. PM asked the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to inform public about future weather conditions through Radio, Television and Print media in collaboration with met office and NDMA, he said. It was asked to Cabinet division to provide relief items through NDMA wherever required and to give it proper publicity, he said adding that further review meeting on flood will be held after 8 to 10 days. Chairman NDMA said that 21 helicopters and 15 boats were used in flood-hit area during rescue operation and further 4 helicopters and 25 boats would be provided in coming days. Minister said that Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani visited Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to express solidarity and receive first hand information about the damages caused by heavy rains and floods in different parts of the province. After a brief stopover at Peshawar Airport, the Prime Minister boarded a helicopter and took an aerial view of the flood affected areas to personally see the situation and assess the difficulties of the people, he said. The Prime Minister, he said, issued instructions to the concerned organisations for urgent rescue, relief and rehabilitation of the people trapped and disclosed because of floodwaters.
