Lahore - The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and cricket community condoled the sad demise of former PCB secretary Waqar Ahmed who passed away the other day.
PCB chairman Shaharyar M Khan, executive committee chief Najam Sethi, chief operating officer Subhan Ahmad and cricket community have offered their heartfelt condolences on the sad demise of Waqar, who was also a former first class cricketer and was a member of Pakistan’s cricket team tour to England in 1967.”
In his message, PCB chairman said: “I have been deeply shocked and dismayed at the demise of Waqar Ahmed. The entire PCB management, indeed Pakistani cricketing fraternity, is deeply saddened at his demise.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time of sorrow. May Allah give his family and loved ones the strength to bear this irreparable loss.”
In his message, former Test cricketer Aftab Gull said: “Waqar was one of the most outstanding cricketers of his generation. He toured England in 1967 and performed well. A man of many parts: a wit, a raconteur, man of learning and a joy to be with, I will miss him.”
It is pertinent to mention here that Waqar was secretary of the board from 1997 to 1999. He was born on 19 December 1947 in Lahore, Pakistan.
He made his first-class debut for Punjab University in the 1964-65 season, just before his 17th birthday. In his third match, he scored 195 against Lahore Reds.
He was selected for Pakistan Under-25 in the third and final match against MCC Under-25 in 1966-67 and scored 32 and 10. But he couldn’t play Test cricket.
