ISLAMABAD   -  The fuel loading of the third unit of 1100 megawatt Karachi Nuclear Power Plant (KANUPP) K-3 kick-started on Friday and will start supply to the national grid by March 2022.

After the commissioning of K-3 in March 2022, the share of nuclear power in the national energy mix will climb to 10 percent, said a spokesman of Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC).

According to the PAEC announcement, fuel loading for the newly built, 1100MW, Karachi Nuclear Power Plant Unit-3 (K-3) started on Friday, after obtaining fuel load permit from Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority (PNRA).

The fuel loading of K-3 has marked the third decade of cooperation in the field of nuclear power generation between Pakistan and China. Pakistan and China had started the nuclear cooperation in December 1991, after Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) and China National Nuclear Cooperation in agreement. The agreement resulted in the construction of 325MW nuclear power plant C-I at Chashma, followed by three more plants at the same location.
