LAHORE - Pakistan No 1 squash player Tayyab Aslam lifted the trophy of CM Punjab International Open Squash Championship that concluded here on Friday.
In the final, Tayyab defeated Israr Ahmed in a four-game thriller 4-0 here at Punjab Squash Complex. The No 1 player took the first game 11-4 but Israr bounced back well to win the second game 11-8. But Tayyab was more determined and used his experienced to overcome Israr and took the next two games 11-6 and 11-4, thus clinched the title.
Provincial Sports Minister Rai Taimoor Bhatti, who was the chief guest, distributed prizes among the players. The tournament was carrying a total cash award of $6000, which were given to the players. Former world champion Jansher Khan, Local Government Secretary and President Punjab Squash Noorul Amin Mengal, squash players and their families were also present on the occasion.
Speaking on the occasion, Rai Taimoor said: “Pakistan has made a name for itself in squash. The game should not to be ignored as Prime Minister Imran Khan has also been given a briefing in today’s meeting regarding the International Squash Court.” Jansher Khan said: “Regular events are being held in Punjab which will surely help Pakistan excel in this game. Holding international tournaments will boost the confidence of local players while I am hopeful that Pakistan will soon regain its lost ground in squash.”
