Government asked to review privatisaton of KESC, PTCL

KARACHI - Labourer's problems will be solved on priority basis and government will provide relief as labourers are the back bone of economy and in this regard wages and other allowances will also be increased to enhance their living standards. Syed Khursheed Ahmed Shah Federal Minister for Labour, Power and Overseas Pakistanis said this while addressing KESC Peoples Workers Union here at Power House on Thursday. He said PPP government would fulfil the promise of "Roti, Kapra, aur Makan" and provide all kinds of relief to the labourers. He said that no discrimination would be bear with the labourers and government increase the living standard of labourers by providing them right wages and other facilities. He said that Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gillani in his first speech abolished the Industrial Relations Ordinance (IRO) and provided relief to the labourers. He further said we also restored labourers' union because we believe on the freedom of labourers' movement and struggle. Parliamentary Leader in Senate Raza Rabbani, Provincial Minister Labour Ameer Nawab, Provincial Law Minister Ayaz Somoro, Deputy Speaker Sindh Shehla Raza, Central Leader PPP N D Khan, PPP President Karachi Syed Faisal Raza Aabdi, Aslam Samo and others spoke on the occasion. Raza Rabbani said that government would introduce new IRO which would not be made according to the wish of World Bank and IMF but according to the wish of Pakistani labourers. He said that we would continue the mission of Shaheed Benzair Bhutto and he assured that all the contract employees in Steel Mill and KESC would be converting into permanent employees soon. He also said that privatisation of KESC and PTCL would likely to be reviewed because during the privatisation process of both the organisations serious misappropriations had been committed by the previous government. Ameer Nawab Provincial Labour Minister said that previous government had snatched the rights of the labourers, which have been restored by the government. He said that labourers have always bee exploited particularly under the IRO. He said government is considering to increase the amount of minimum wages up to 10 thousands. Aslam Samo said that KESC was sold in on RS 16 billion by the previous government and its actual cost is Rs 62billion. He demanded the government to review the privatisation of KESC and provide relief to the KESC labourers. A large numbers of labourers belonging to KESC, PTCL, Steel Mills and KPT also attended the meeting.
