PM to give awards to CWG medal winners today

ISLAMABAD Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani will distribute cash awards, certificates and shields today among the medal winners of the 19th Commonwealth Games, which were held in New Delhi from October 3-17 this year. Pakistan earned two gold, one silver and two bronze medals in the 72-nation sports event. The special ceremony will be held at Prime Minister Secretariat afternoon. The top officials of Ministry of Sports, Pakistan Olympic Association (POA), Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) and representatives of national sports federations will also attend the ceremony. Besides the medal winners, some special cash awards, certificates and shields will also be distributed amongst the top young players in the national and international competitions. Wrestler, Azhar Hussain will be awarded Rs.7 millions for lifting one gold and one silver in the commonwealth event while his team-mate Mohammad Inam will collect Rs.5 millions according to national sports policy. Boxers Mohammad Waseem and Haroon Iqbal will pocket each Rs.2 millions for lifting the bronze in the games. Sixteen talented players from different sports will be awarded Young Sportsperson awards to encourage the national athletes to do well in the upcoming international events. Aamir Atlas Khan, Farhan Zaman, Nasir Iqbal Khan, Maria Toorpakai (squash), Mohammad Tousiq (hockey), Shah Hussain (judo), Kiran Khan, Ghulam Sakina, Hoor Asrar Rauf, Eesha Khan (swimming), Ali Haider (wrestling), Sameer Iftikhar, Sarah Mahboob (tennis), Maham Aftab (taekwondo), Abu Bakar Durrani (canoeing) and Umama Qadri (netball) will be awarded Young Sportsperson awards.
