It’s much harder to do comic role, says Saman Ansari

LAHORE - Saman Ansari is currently being watched in a flamboyant avatar in her latest drama serial Romeo Weds Heer, which has been getting mixed reviews from the audience. In a brief encounter with The Nation, She talks about her role in the serial. Following are excerpts.

Talking about her character, Saman said: “I am Dr. Shahnaz, an elitist, successful cosmetologist, and plastic surgeon. I have a larger than life presence; both in looks and style of communication. I am quite dominating and love to control most people around me. I am playing the mother of Romeo and the wife of Dr. Raja who always meekly succumbs to his wife’s dramatic nuances.”

“It is much harder to do a comic role. You just cannot show that you are ‘doing comedy’. It has to be totally natural to be funny. This is the first time I have played a comic character for a TV serial. I wanted it to be a signature that would be remembered. Not overdone but present at the right moments, when Shahnaz is doting over her son or finds something adorable she goes kuchi kuchi,” she explained.

Reminiscing about her memories with some of the cast members, Ansari shared her feelings saying, “I knew most of the team from an earlier project Khaani, so it was easy to continue the chemistry we had already created. However, since the essence was totally different and most scenes included a large number of actors at a time, it was essential not to step on any toes to ensure the overall presentation was flawless.”

She added, “Working opposite to a veteran like Mr. Firdaus Jamal (my arch rival in this play) was a true joy. He was full of appreciation of my acting especially the action-reaction needed in fast-paced dialogues.”

The serial is written by Muhammad Younis Butt, directed by Anjum Shahzad and produced under 7th Sky Entertainment. Saman Ansari recently debut on the stage of theatre with Jasoosi Dunya.
