US raised Quetta Shura with Zardari, says Malik

ISLAMABAD - Federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik here on Thursday told the Senates Standing Committee on the Interior that at least 5000 Pakistani nationals were languishing in British Jails. He also informed the Committee that more than 5 million Afghan nationals were present in Pakistans territory. However, he said that in this connection the government was holding meetings with UNCHR for their early departure. The meeting of Senate Standing Committee was held here at NADRA headquarters and presided by Senator Talha Mahmood. Rehman Malik also told the committee that a record of 90,000 passports issued to Afghans were recovered and cancelled. Later, talking to media men, Rehman said that the decision to launch operation in Waziristan has yet to be taken. However, he said, Foreign militants are being targeted in Waziristan. To a query, Interior Minister confirmed that the American leadership in Washington had asked President Asif Ali Zardari about the presence of Al-Qaeda men in Quetta. We have asked them to provide us with any evidence in this regard, he added. He said that 63 terrorists have been arrested for the last several months. However, he said that there are some fresh intelligence report that militants could target some important installations and personalities in the country. It may be recalled here that there were reports that a Pakistani family, which was jailed in Saudi Arabia in a drug smuggling case, were due back on September 28, but could not reach so far. Talha Mahmood, while talking to media men said, I contacted Pakistani ambassador to Saudi Arabia and he told me that there is no problem from Saudi Arabia, but he (ambassador) informed me that government of Pakistan is delaying the departure of family, Senator Talha added.
