Commission on Abbottabad incident

Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani with the consultation of President but not with the opposition leader, has formed a commission to probe Abbottabad incident over Osama bin Ladens undetected presence in Pakistan for a long time. It is a pity that Inquiry commission has been set up after one month that ideally speaking should have been set up immediately. The Government always adopts delaying tactics over national issues and is only interested in staying in the office by hook or by crook. President Asif Ali Zardari has appreciated American role in the war on terror by writing an article in the Washington Post. Earlier, Prime Minister had called Abbottabad incident a great Victory. It is shameful that no one condemned US violation of sovereignty of Pakistan. There is no doubt that government was hesitant to form a commission as it feared that its findings would go against the interests of the government and its patron USA. The commissions findings can address concerns of the nation and bring culprits to justice. Now the time has come to bring civil and army personnel to justice. Director General ISI Lieutenant General Pasha had accepted responsibility before parliament and offered himself to appear before any forum. Why not our political leadership? Nawaz Sharif has expressed his reservations about the construction of the commission. Even before forming the commission, members of the commission were not taken into confidence. Also, its not sure that all the members comprising the commission would be able to perform their duties. Government cuts a sorry figure to buy time for passing the budget. Otherwise, it does not want to offend America and bring true facts to the nation. Not only Abbottabad incident but also terrorist attack at Mehran Base is not of any concern for the government. Different commissions have been set up at different levels to probe Mehran Base attack, as if not to investigate true facts but conceal true facts. Now the government would further waste time to take parties into confidence and start negotiation with the opposition. The Government and the opposition would remain quarreling over the status of the commission for some time. Budget, from the assembly, would be passed during this blame game and the Abbottabad issue would be put to cold storage. PEERZADAH ABDUL HAFEEZ, Multan, June 2.
