Substandard ice-creams causing ailments in Peshawar

Peshawar   -  While authorities have been emphasising on SOPs to contain coronavirus, vendors selling ice-creams have flooded various parts of the provincial capital. The doctors also call for a ban on the substandard ice-creams as it can cause spread of coronavirus and other diseases too.

Some medical experts advise that even the ice-creams of famous brands should be avoided these days as the commodity could cause health problems, let alone the substandard ice-creams being sold openly in various areas of Peshawar.

This scribe witnessed a number of vendors and found that most of the ice-creams being sold were substandard.

Talking to The Nation, Provincial Doctors Association president Dr Ameer Taj said: “Ice-cream these days cand cause throat and chest infections while the hospitals are already overburdened with the COVID-19 patients, this is why the authorities should ban the commodity’s sale.”

“Also, a COVID-positive ice-cream seller can spread the contagion to hundreds of people and it can create more problems if an ice-cream content is having the problem,” he added.

He said that not only COVID-19, but the substandard ice-creams being sold in the streets may also cause, typhoid and other infections.  Several residents in the city also complained of indifference of the authorities concerned regarding the unchecked sales of ice-creams. Some of them said their children developed throat and chest infections due to the use of ice-creams.

The Nation phoned DC Peshawar Khalid Mehmood and also delivered messages on his WhatsApp number to know if authorities intend to initiate actions in this regard. However, he did not respond on the matter after reading the questions delivered on his WhatsApp.
