Black Caps take ascendancy

A wet outfield and bad light shortened the first days play. But even a shortened day didnt restrict New Zealand from taking an upper hand. Daniel Vettori won the toss and put Pakistan in. While New Zealand were determined in their approach throughout the day, Pakistanis were careless after a cautious start. For a change Pakistan openers Imran Farhat and Salman Butt added 60 runs for the first wicket in 32 overs. Salman was the first to go and this started the slide for Pakistan. They lost six wickets in 23 overs as New Zealand tightened their grip. New Zealand bowlers kept bowling tight line and four out of six Pakistani wickets were due to incorrect shot selection. When bad light forced an early end Pakistan were tottering at 161-6. No one apart from Umar Akmal managed to put a decent score on the board. The youngster at number three looked somewhat troubled by the seam movement yet he managed his way to a gutsy 46 off 48 balls before falling to Daryl Tuffey. Pakistan made three changes in team: Salman Butt, Misbah-ul-Haq and Danish Kaneria came in for Khurram Manzoor, Fawad Alam and Saeed Ajmal. The openers did their job of taking the shine off the ball the middle order collapsed like a pack of cards. It was a pity that Pakistan lost three out of six wickets to Daniel Vettori on a seaming pitch. Umar Akmal and Misbah-ul-Haq tried to repair the damage with a 53 runs stand for the fourth wicket but they too couldnt last long. New Zealand seamers also bowled well and made life difficult for Pakistani batsmen. Daryl Tuffey was the second best Kiwi bowler with figures of 2-32. After a poor show Pakistanis are only themselves to blame. Had the middle order applied themselves, things would have been much better for Pakistan. Now on day two Pakistanis will have to bat for as long as possible. Kamran Akmal and Mohammad Aamer have the ability to get Pakistan out of the trouble. A score in excess of 250 can be fighting for Pakistan. Star of day one Vettori gives New Zealand the upped hand Daniel Vettori is a class act and Pakistan got a fair idea of it on the first day. Vettori won a crucial toss and inserted Pakistan into bat under seaming conditions. Initially the new opening pair of Imran Farhat and Salman Butt handled Vettori well and scored runs easily. But After Ian OBrien removed Salman Butt, Daniel Vettori got into the act and rattled Pakistan with two wickets in one over. First he made Imran Farhat edge one in the slips and then a ball later, he dealt the killer blow by trapping Mohammad Yousuf leg before for naught. Yousuf was only half forward and looked dead straightaway. Soon Pakistan were 66-3 from 60-0. Vettori was into his groove now but young Umar Akmal played well against Vettori and slog-swept him for a six and scored nine runs of an over just before tea. Daniel Vettori got rid of Pakistans last hope Misbah-ul-Haq towards the end of the day. Vettori bowled this ball straight with the arm and Misbah was hit plumb in front and low. It looked out straightaway but Misbah went for the review and the earlier decision was upheld. This dismissal left Pakistan in trouble at 156-6 and Vettori can without doubt be called the architect of this Pakistani downfall. Vettori ended the day with 3-42 off 14 overs. It was a fine performance by the bespectacled left arm spinner. Nabeel Sabir
