The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) named Justice (retd) Dost Muhammad Khan as caretaker Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) on Tuesday.
A consultative meeting of the election commission was held earlier on Tuesday.
Earlier, former chief minister of KP Pervez Khattak had recommended bureaucrats Himayatullah Khan and Ejaz Ahmed Qureshi, while leader of the opposition Maulana Lutfur Rehman had proposed the names of businessperson Manzoor Khan Afridi and Justice (retd) Dost Muhammad Khan.
Both former chief minister KP leader of opposition had failed to reach a consensus for caretaker CM. Later on, a parliamentary committee formed to decide and appoint caretaker chief minister for the province.
But, however, prior to the meeting, Awami National Party (NAP) leader raised issues about the composition of the parliamentary committee.
Therefore, the matter was forwarded to ECP.
Justice (retd) Dost Muhammad Khan served as a senior judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan since 1 February 2014. Justice (retd) Khan remained Chief Justice (CJ) of the Peshawar High Court from 17 November 2011 to 31 January 2014.
He hails from district bannu, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and obtained his law degree from Government Sindh Muslim Law College, Karachi in 1976. He remained President of District Bar Association, Bannu from 1986-87 and President of Peshawar High Court Bar Association D.I. Khan Bench from 1999-2000.
He joined judiciary as additional Judge in 2002.
Justice (retd) Khan was among those judges who refused to take oath under the Provisional Constitutional Order (PCO) of 3 November 2007.
