ISLAMABAD - Pakistan Ambassador to United States Masood Khan and permanent representative to UN Ambassador Munir Akram face uncertainty in their high profile diplomatic tasks due to their non-confirmation by the new government.
Highly placed diplomatic sources confided to The Nation that the Foreign Office after change of the government had conveyed to both the Ambassadors to continue their responsibilities till further order. However, a formal confirmation letter is yet to be sent by the foreign minister to them for continuation of their job.
Both the Ambassadors are political appointees and were appointed by the previous PTI government. Ambassador Masood Khan had joined the Pakistan embassy in Washington only two weeks before the change of the regime in Islamabad.
Ambassador Munir Akram was given a two-year extension in December 2021, keeping in view his outclass diplomatic work at the UN in New York.
Although Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari met both the Ambassadors in New York in his recent visit, but did not give them any such assurance that both may continue their high profile diplomatic assignments. Ambassador Masood Khan has yet not presented his credentials to the US president as well.
Sources in the Pakistan embassy in Washington say that the embassy is awaiting response from the State Department chief of protocol regarding presentation of credentials to the President.
