British swimmers' trunks 'go missing'

Nine Team GB swimming kit bags have reportedly gone missing with just hours to go before the Olympic opening ceremony in Rio. The essential items vanished from swimmers' rooms inside the troubled Olympic village on Friday, a day before their first competition. Back in April, diver Tom Daley described the Stella McCartney designed red, blue and white kit as 'incredible'. A British Olympic Association spokesperson told MailOnline: 'A small number of bags – 9 from a total of nearly 3,000 pieces of luggage – are currently unaccounted for following their transfer from Belo Horizonte to the Olympic Village in Rio. 'We are working hard to locate the bags as soon as possible. In the meantime all athletes continue to train as normal and are unaffected when it comes to training and competition wear.

Danish athletes plagued with thefts

Denmark's Olympic squad chief Morten Rodtwitt revealed he and his athletes have been plagued by thefts and filthy quarters in Rio's Olympic Village. The squad's chef de mission told Danish media he had been robbed of his iPad and thieves had stolen mobile phones, clothes and even bed sheets from athletes' and squad members' apartments. He told Denmark's Berlingske newspaper just days before Friday's opening ceremony: 'It's extremely irritating.' The thefts come on top of a string of problems with the athletes' rooms which have forced the Danish delegation to complain more than 150 times about their 36 apartments and filthy conditions. Denmark's handball association head Ulrik Wilbek said the buildings here are simply not in order.

Olympic village flooded with water

It's unclear exactly what went wrong in Rio on Thursday night and early Friday morning, but it appears at least one stairwell/wing of the lodgings in the Olympic village is on its way to being underwater. Czech Olympic cyclist Zdenek Stybar posted an Instagram video of a torrential downpour of water falling in the team's "house" in Rio. There are holes to fill in here, but it looks like it was a clear night in Rio, and barring some other weird possibility, this appears to be the result of a gigantic plumbing failure or break in the hotel's water main.

Aussie Zika-protective shirts stolen

The Danish team robbery comes after Brazilian firemen stole Zika-protective shirts from Australia's residence during an evacuation at their Olympic accommodation, when a laptop was also pinched and other computer equipment rifled through. Australian team boss Kitty Chiller says she crossed paths with the thieves at the height of Friday's fire drama at the Olympic athletes' village. A report from authorities investigating the blaze revealed several shortcomings in the response to the fire, which Australian hierarchy believe was caused by a cigarette tossed by a local worker into piles of rubbish in the basement.
