NAB orders probe into QMC irregularities

QUETTA - National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Chairman Justice (r) Javed Iqbal on Friday ordered an enquiry into the Quetta Metropolitan Corporation irregularities over several complaints.

The NAB chairman, taking notice of alleged embezzlement of billions of rupees in Quetta Metropolitan Corporation, said officials of the corporation leased lands illegally and allowed constructions.

After the NAB chairman took notice of the matter, Balochistan NAB Director General Irfan Naeem Mangi issued a directive to freeze assets of Attique and Haroon plazas in the city. The disputed lands and plazas and would be sealed on the court orders.

Justice (r) Javed Iqbal, on complaints of alleged corruption, ordered the Balochistan NAB DG to probe the QMC’s embezzlement of government lands, violation of rules and regulations, illegal lease of lands and construction.

Last day, the NAB also okayed an enquiry into the assets of Adviser to Balochistan CM Ubaidullah Jan Babat.

After appraising the documents, it was unearthed that Quetta Metropolitan Corporation officials, exceeding their powers, inflicted loss of billions of rupees to the national exchequer by awarding unlawful lease of the precious estate within the city and allowing illegal construction.

Earlier, on May 6, 2016, the NAB recovered more than Rs 730 million from the house of the then Balochistan finance secretary Mushtaq Raisani and detained him.

The instant orders of the NAB chairman against the CM adviser and QMC came at a time when no-confidence motion against Chief Minister Nawab Sanaullah Zehri has stirred up a political storm.
