SHC extends protective bail of Nisar Khuhro in wheat procurement case

KARACHI   -  The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Friday extended the protective bail of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Nisar Khuhro and others in a case pertaining to alleged irregularities in the wheat procurement.

Nisar Khuhro along with other accused in the case appeared before the SHC bench to seek an extension in the pre-arrest bail.

The SHC while directing Nisar Khuhro and others to appear before NAB court Sukkur extended the protective bail for 10 days. The reference is being shifted to the NAB court from the high court after the promulgation of the NAB amendment ordinance.

Khuhro, who served as the opposition leader, Sindh Assembly speaker, and food minister, is facing a number of graft cases including alleged irregularities in wheat procurement, assets beyond income and misuse of power instituted by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB). He is also being investigated over his alleged involvement in money laundering.

Meanwhile, the police in Karachi produced MPA Jam Owais Gohram Jokhio in court on Friday which handed over the lawmaker to the police on three-day physical remand.

Member of Provincial Assembly (MPA) Sindh Jam Owais surrendered to Malir Police on Thursday night in connection with murder of Nazim Jokhio. The MPA was accused of beating Nazim Jokhio to death for filming former’s hunting of houbara bustard along with his Arab friends.

The MPA was nominated in the FIR lodged at Memon Goth Police Station. The family of the deceased with other protesters had staged protests in Karachi and Thatta against the murder. They, however, they ended their protests the legislator surrendered to police.

Meanwhile, a joint police team led by SSP Malir has been constituted to investigate Nazim Jokhio’s murder.

On Friday morning, Jam Owais was produced in the court where the judicial magistrate handed him over to police on physical remand.

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah had taken notice of the protests and had directed the police to get the FIR registered as desired by Nazim Jokhio’s family.

Earlier, after the funeral of the slain Nazim Jokhio, the family members protested on the National Highway, blocking the both lanes causing a huge traffic jam.

On the National Highway, protesters burned tyres and blocked roads from Karachi to Thatta and chanted slogans against the police and the Sindh government.

Reportedly, Nazim Jhokio, aged 30, happened to come across some foreigners who were hunting houbara bustards. He told them that it was illegal to hunt this bird down. But they continued with their hunting game. Nazim made a recording of it and later uploaded it on social media.

After some while, Nazim was abducted and his tortured body was found in a farmhouse of MPA Jam Awais Gohram Jokhio in Murad Goth, Malir. There were bruises and abrasions on his body.

The medico-legal officer stated that he could confirm the cause of death after getting chemical and pathology report. Dr Areeb took two samples from Nazim’s body and sent them to laboratory for medical examination.

According to the doctor, after seeing marks of torture on victim’s body, it was obvious that a man’s body could not bear so much torture.
