Wapda for speedy completion of Tarbela extension project

TARBELA GHAZI - The Chairman Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA), Lt Gen (R) Muzammil Hussain, has emphasized upon the project management to complete the 1410 MW Tarbela 4th Extension Hydropower Project as early as possible.

Besides accelerating the pace of work, the stipulated quality standards must remain in true letter and spirit, he said.

He expressed these views during his visit to Tarbela 4th Extension Hydropower Project yesterday.

“Energy and water availability would have been improved after completion of the projects underway,” he said.

While discussing with the project authorities, consultants and contractors, Chairman WAPDA urged them to complete the project within stipulated time period. Speaking on the occasion, WAPDA chairman directed the project authorities to make utmost efforts in view of work constraints for completion of all three generating units of extension-4 project– each of them having a generation capacity of 470 MW - in a phased manner in the shortest possible time.

It is pertinent to mention here that Tarbela 4th Extension Hydropower Project is being constructed on tunnel No 4 of Tarbela Dam.

The project will increase generation capacity of Tarbela Hydel Power Station from 3478 MW to 4888 MW after installation of three units with installed capacity of 470 MW each.

The World Bank is providing US$ 840 million for construction of the project. On completion, Tarbela 4th Extension Hydropower Project will add about 3.84 billion units of low-cost electricity to the National Grid per annum and the project will pay back its cost in just three years.

Earlier, WAPDA Chairman visited WAPDA Cadet College Tarbela and reviewed the facilities being provided to the students with regard to the curricular and co-curricular activities.

He also discussed with college administration the ways and means to improve those facilities for imparting quality education and building characters of the college students.
