FAPUASA demands HEC devolution

Islamabad - Annual election and general body meeting of Federation of All Pakistan Universities Academic Staff Association (FAPUASA) was held here at Allama Iqbal Open University.
The august representative body of university teachers elected Dr Niamatullah Laghari, professor Sindh Agriculture University Tandojam, as president, Dr Iqbal Munir, professor Agriculture University Peshawar, as vice-president, and Dr Attique Zaman, professor International Islamic University as general secretary. The federation also elected representatives for provincial chapters which include Dr Ayaz Keerio? and Dr Asif Ali? Memon (Sindh chapter), Dr Kaleem Bareach? and Dr Sohrab Khan (Balochistan chapter), Dr  Fazli Nasir and Dr Faiz Ali Khan (KP chapter), Dr Hassan Mubeen Alam and Dr Mirza Jahanzeb (Punjab chapter) and Dr Ishtiaq Ali and Dr Abheer Rashid for Islamabad chapter.
The general body meeting of the university teachers expressed complete dissatisfaction regarding the response of Higher Education Commission (HEC) on the solution of core issues of teaching community which have been pending for many years and HEC’s officials are not in a position to issue proper and timely minutes and notifications regarding various meetings and resolutions.
Criticising the functionality of present federal HEC, the teachers strongly condemned the repressive and draconian decisions of HEC under the fake allegations of plagiarism based on violation of set policies and procedures. The teachers’ body also criticised the non-existent role of HEC in the solution of the problems faced by the faculty members of Gomal University in KP where vice-chancellor and the governor/chancellor are continuously violating the academic standards set by the statutory bodies and the HEC.
The FAPUASA also condemned HEC for not taking any action regarding provincial domicile based appointment criteria for faculty members in some universities of Punjab, which is clear violation of the constitution of the country and also policies of HEC.  
The FAPUASA general body also unanimously demanded Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif for immediate devolution of HEC in the light of the 18th amendment.
 It also demanded the provincial government for proper legislation and implementation of provincial HECs in consultation with the representatives of the university teachers.
