ISLAMABAD - The commuters are facing massive traffic jams at the Islamabad expressway due to the poor and incomplete infrastructure and Islamabad’s administrations as well as the Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP) seem least bothered to resolve the lingering issue of long traffic queues which becomes the order of the day.
Residents of DHA, Bahria Town, Gulberg Green, PWD, Koral and travellers between Islamabad and other parts of country face huge problems due to the dilapidated condition of the road. A big part of this road has not been re-carpeted for a long time, said Jamil Khan, a vehicle owner, while talking to The Nation on Saturday.“We took this issue to the district authorities but in vain,” he said. Another senior journalist of the federal capital said that massive traffic jam on Islamabad Highway near PWD interchange has become a big issue for commuters. The recently constructed interchange did not solve the traffic problem; instead, it has made it worse. Work is still incomplete after many months, he said. Many others expressed their deep concerns over apathy of the district government and the traffic police.
When contacted by The Nation, the SSP Traffic Islamabad, Rai Mazhar, however, said that the road condition has deteriorated ahead of Gulberg Greens, and five bridges create severe traffic congestion. He said that the entire Punjab’s traffic passes through the Islamabad expressway. The SSP said that he has deployed a congestion response unit to facilitate the commuters.
