Rescuing agriculture?

Your editorial on 'Rescuing agriculture' (on October 1) mentions water scarcity but falls short of mentioning Kalabagh dam which is the only way we can get the required quantity of water in about six years time. Also, water from Bhasha dam will not be available to northern Punjab without the left bank canal at the Kalabagh site. That means the national food production will be severely hit. Unless you come out boldly for Kalabagh dam, we are doomed to go round in circles and the talk of rescuing agriculture will also be mere rhetoric. Your stress on oil shows you are not aware of the dangerous consequences of greenhouse gases produced by burning of fossil fuel, which could cause global warming. That, in turn, can cause rapid melting of glaciers resulting in flash floods followed by droughts, a real doomsday scenario. Please entrust a technically qualified person on your staff to handle this complex subject. My services are available free of charge. Merely putting out an editorial every now and then does not absolve you of the responsibility a national paper owes to the nation. -KHURSHID ANWER, Lahore, via e-mail, October 6.
