Major reshuffle in Pakistan Army

ISLAMABAD - In a major reshuffle in Pakistan Army, Lieutenant General Nadeem Ahmed Anjum was appointed on Wednesday as the new Director-General of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) while replacing his predecessor Lieutenant General Faiz Hamid. 

The outgoing DG ISI Lt Gen Faiz Hamid after his long stint at the country’s premier intelligence agency has been posted as the Peshawar corps commander, according to a statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).

The ISPR announcing the reshuffle in military said that Lt Gen Mohammad Saeed has been posted as Karachi Corps Commander, Lt Gen Muhammad Aamer has been posted as commander Gujranwala Corps while Lt Gen Asim Munir has been appointed as the Quarter Master General.

Similarly, Lt Gen Nauman Mehmood has been made President of the National Defence University (NDU), while Maj Gen Asim Malik has been promoted to the rank of lieutenant general and appointed as the Adjutant General of Pakistan Army, said the media wing of Armed Forces.

Before his appointment as DG ISI, Lt Gen Anjum was performing his duties as Corps Commander Karachi. He was promoted to the rank of lieutenant general in September 2019.

Prior to getting his new posting, Gen Munir was working as the Corps Commander Gujranwala and he has also served as the DG ISI before posting of Gen Faiz Hameed on this position.  

Gen Amir was earlier serving as the Adjutant General.

The prime minister by virtue of his post has the authority to appoint director general ISI but this posting is usually decided by PM in consultation with the chief of army staff.  

The outgoing DG ISI, Lt Gen Faiz Hameed had assumed the charge of his position on June 16, 2019. Before this, he had served ISI as the head of internal security. His appointment as corps commander Peshawar is significant in the wake of ongoing developments in Afghanistan after the takeover of Kabul by Taliban in the middle of August.

According to the ISPR announcement, the newly appointed DG ISI Lt Gen Anjum was commissioned in the Light Anti-Tank Battalion of Punjab Regiment.

He has diversified experience of command, staff and instructional assignments.

He’s graduate of Combined Arms Centre UK, and Staff College Quetta, and has also studied at National Defence University (NDU), Islamabad, APCSS USA and Royal College of Defense Studies, UK.

He holds a master degree from King’s College London and NDU Islamabad.  

General Anjum has vast experience of command in conventional as well as sub-conventional threat environment. He has been on command on both western border and Line of Control besides having long service in Balochistan.

He commanded an infantry brigade in South Waziristan district of erstwhile FATA, an infantry brigade in then Kurram Agency and Hangu district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa during Op Zarb-e-Azb and he was inspector general (IG) Frontier Corps, Balochistan when Operation Raddul Fasad was launched.

He has been an instructor at Pakistan Military Academy (PMA), Staff College and NDU. He has been Commandant of Staff College, Quetta. He has also been Chief of staff of 5 Corps.
