Aisam storms into US Open quarters

LAHORE Aisamul-Haq Qureshi created history yet again by becoming the first Pakistani ever to reach the quarter final of the US Open. First, with his Czech Republic partner Kveta Peschke, Aisam made it through to the quarter-finals of the mixed doubles event after two hard fought super tie breaker victories. The pair are due to face South Americans Gisela Dulko of Argentina and Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay next. However, it is in the mens doubles event that Aisam is making big waves. The first Pakistani ever to be seeded at a grand slam, Aisam and partner Rohan Bopanna are responsible for the biggest upset of the draw. In their round of 16 match, Aisam and Bopanna overcame the no. 2 seeds Daniel Nestor and Nedad Zimonjic 6-3, 6-4. This pair, currently ranked no.2 in the world behind the record-setting Bryan brothers (another victim of Aisam and Bopanna only a few weeks ago), have been sitting atop the doubles rankings for considerable time. Nestor is also well known for a well-nigh indomitable partnership he forged with Mark Knowles before joining up with Zimonjic. Under the scorching mid-day sun on Sunday, Aisam and Bopanna took to the court against one of the tournament favourites. Throughout the set, it was a question of keeping ones nerve and not giving in to the advances of your opponent. Nestor and Zimonjic looked set to dominate when they fashioned three break points in one service game of Aisam and Bopannas, but the Asians held firm, and did not let their opponents break serve. However, where Aisam and Bopanna had been resolute in defending, they were devastating in attack. Nestor saw his service game broken crucially, in what proved to be the deciding game of the set. It was the only break of serve in the first set, which the Asians took 6-3. The second set witnessed the same fortitude from both sides, but it was the Asians who looked likely to carry their momentum from the previous set, and so it proved. They secured a break of serve against Zimonjic early in the set, and then held on to their own serves to see out this set and secure another fantastic victory against highly rated opposition. Aisam and Bopanna will next face the 9th seed pair, Wesley Moodey and Dick Norman.
