Punjab govt issued notice in PEF case

LAHORE Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed of the Lahore High Court on Thursday issued notice to Punjab government, for April 9, on a petition challenging appointment of eight directors of Punjab Education Foundation (PEF), allegedly in violation of the Punjab Foundation Act 2004. The court observed that it will ensure implementation of merit policy. The petition was filed by Muhammad & Ahmad in the public interest. They submitted that the PEF was first established under Punjab Education Foundation Act 1991, but this Act was replaced by Punjab Education Foundation Act 2004. According to Section 5 of the new law, they submitted that a board comprising seven government and eight non-government directors has to be constituted to run the affairs of the foundation. He alleged that the Punjab government through a notification dated March 18, 2011, has appointed six government officers/public servants on the seats reserved for non-government directors. He contended that the said appointments were politically motivated and in violation of law and constitution. He prayed the court to declare the said appointments as illegal.
