5-day training on Juvenile Justice Act, HRs begins in Peshawar

Peshawar - A five-day training workshop on Juvenile Justice Act and human rights began at Malik Saad Shaheed Police Lines on Wednesday.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr Sanaullah Abbasi inaugurated the training workshop, being jointly organised by Peshawar Police and a non-government organisation the Forum for Dignity Initiatives.

Capital City Police Officer Abbas Ahsan, SSP Operations Yasir Afridi and other official were also present.

In his welcome address, SSP Operations Yasir Afridi highlighted the aims and objectives of the workshop.

Speaking on the occasion, IGP Dr Sanaullah Abbasi said that various events were being organised to further sensitise police on all human rights, particularly of child, women, and other marginalised segments of society.

He said police were the guarantor of basic human rights, particularly of children, women, transgender and minorities and collective response of the society was a true reflection to judge the police performance in this connection.

He said all the accused in child abuse cases were not only identified but were arrested from even far-flung areas.

The IGP said the cases of child abuse had been taking place since long, but that nowadays these were being reported due to the media revolution, which also serve as a guiding force for the police.

“We are living in Post-Truth Era where 10 years old videos and news are being published deliberately to create confusion amongst the people, but still the police are trying to improve performance,” he added.

The IGP said that despite limited resources and other constraints, KP police were better performing their professional obligations. He said 42000 disputes had been resolved through the dispute resolution councils (DRCs) in the province so far.

The IGP said special desks have been set up at police stations to better handle cases of women, children as well as transgender community.

He said human rights had been restored in the merged districts, adding that 29000 ex-Levies and Khasadar personnel were being trained after their absorption into the police force of the province.
