LAHORE - The South Asian Women in Media (SAWM) organised a ceremony yesterday to observe Women’s Day at South Asia Free Media Association (SAFMA).
The event was attended by representatives from renowned women including Bushra Aitzaz of PPP, Shaista Pervez Malik and Saba Sadiq of PML-N, Andleeb Abbas of PTI, Farida Shaheed, Justice (r) Nasira Javed Iqbal, Sajida Mir, Dr Nusrat Habib Ranam, Dr Sughra Sadaf and PILAC Director Fakhra Tehreem. The event was moderated by Imtiaz Alam.
The seminar was attended by representatives of a broad section of working women, civil society activists, students and women journalists.
On the occasion, the participants passed a resolution endorsing the United Nation’s call for ‘Planet 50-50 By 2030: Step It Up For Gender Equality’ and urging the government to implement the targets set by the UN for the empowerment, equal human rights and participation of women in all spheres of life on equal footing.
They also reiterated their support to UN’s sustainable development goals to achieve equal participation of women, equal rights in property, equal wages and equal access to social services, economic uplift, social and food security and protection from violence.
Further, the resolution welcomed the legislations passed in Pakistan, including Women Protection Act to protect women from violence, sexual harassment, honour killing and from inhuman social and cultural traditions. It ends with a call upon the government to implement all the legislations and various Acts to bring an end to various kinds of discriminations against women.
The event was followed by musical celebration in which Pakistan’s emerging drummer Arishma performed, as SAWN wants to highlight young emerging women talent of Pakistan.
