SC bars Ishaq Dar from Senatorship

The Supreme Court of Pakistan has suspended Senate membership of former finance minister Ishaq Dar on Tuesday.

The court was hearing a case against the acceptance of Ishaq Dar’s nomination papers in the Senate elections. Then, Chief Justice Saqib Nisar asked the reason of Dar’s failure to appear before the court despite being summoned in last hearing of the case.

One day he must have to appear before the court, the chief justice remarked.

While Justice Ijazul Ahsan remarked that whenever Ishaq Dar appears on TV, he seems healthy but the medical reports that he submits show him unfit.

A petition was filed in which it was claimed that a person who is vamoosing in a corruption case cannot be elected as Senator.

Earlier, Dar was re-elected to the upper house of the Parliament last month but didn’t take his oath. He has been in London since October last year on medical grounds.

A case is underway against him regarding the possession of illegal assets in the accountability court on directions of the Supreme Court in the Panama Papers case.
