Ex-skippers hail football team

LAHORE Former National skippers and FIFA Referees have appreciated Pakistan Football Federation (PFF)s President Makhdoom Syed Faisal Saleh Hayat for superb display of Pakistani football team that whip past 2008 edition semi-finalist Bhutan 7-0 in SAFF Championship on Tuesday. They said it was a dream for every Pakistani to show scoring ability against foreign teams and it became reality because Faisal Saleh Hayat is taking tangible steps in boosting football among Pakistani men and women and. It is easy to hold a formidable rival at home by gaining advantage of home field, fans and atmosphere but to thrash opposition at neutral territory is a big ask. Thus display at Dhakas Bangabandhu National Stadium is something out of nothing and it was second time in entire history of SAFF Championship that a team managed to steer seven goals in a match, a feat never performed by India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh etc in biennial event, said Ghulam Rabbani, captain of Pakistan team which played against Burma (now known as Myanmar) in 1961. Zafar Iqbal, skipper in SAFF Championship 1993, said : It was big achievement considering previous outings between the two in 1999 when Pakistan managed only 2-1 win. The 7-0 scoreline at Dhaka has provided immense pleasure to the soccer lovers in the country as foreign players combined superbly with home-grown players and besides Arif Mehmoods thunderous hat-trick, British-based Reis Ashraf and Shabir Khan were among scorers. The outcome is more significant because it has been achieved by a young team, comprising several U23 players who will go Dhaka again next year for defense of title in SA Games soccer. Shaukat Mufti, captain of Pakistan in 1986 Iran 's Ten-Day Tournament, said that the vital ingredients of morale and fighting spirit were also superb. Two-goal hero Muhammad Essa whose talent as an excellent playmaker could never be challenged, has proved his mettle by emerging as the most important member of the team. He was given good support by Mehmood Ali, Abdul Aziz, Jadeed Khan, Khuda Bakhsh, foreigners Amjad Iqbal and Atif Bashir. Goal keeper Jaffar Khan was also outstanding under the bar. To restrict three South Asian team to only one goal in 270 minutes, shows that our footballers have courage, exuberant to face more skilful opponents. Akbar Raisani, skipper of Pakistan during 1981 King Cup at Bangkok , observed that the team won the hearts of soccer fans back home through team performance and industrious performance and hoped that National team would continue their spirited fashion in 2010 international events too. All former skippers of Pakistan are of the view that the way PFF is going on under leadership of Faisal Saleh Hayat, it looks as if football is taking charge of title of national game, over running hockey.
