UN's investigation

Pakistan had requested the UNO to probe into the circumstances leading to the assassination of PPP leader Benazir Bhutto on 27th Dec, 2007. The investigations would cost Pakistan over 5 millions US dollars. The members of the UN commission has got six months to complete the investigations. It is headed by Chile's UN ambassador Heraldo Munoz with members from Indonesia and Ireland. The terms of reference are "to inquire into the facts and circumstances of BB's death". The duty of determining criminal responsibility of the perpetrators of the assassination remains with the Pakistan authorities. It is beyond comprehension that how can the commission find out the cause of death after the lapse of over 18 months of assassination. The forensic report is prepared immediately after the crime. Will the commission dig out the grave and examine the body? Mr Asif Ali Zardari as husband of the deceased did not allow the government to carry out the post mortem, which would have determined the cause of the death. I fail to understand how the UN Commission would find out the circumstances of death at such this stage and how they would spend the six months of the mandate; may be shuttling between Rawalpindi and Garhi Khuda Bukhsh. Pakistan investigation agencies are quite competent to find what UN commission is going to determine. In fact, the local agencies are more competent than foreigners. Secondly Mr Zardari has many a times announced that he knew the murderers. It is the right time that he should name the killers which would help the UN Commission to wind up their investigations much before the scheduled time.-MUHAMMAD AZHAR KHWAJA, Lahore, via e-mail, July 2.
