Israels mad-dog strategy

The most ferocious Israeli general, Moshe Dayan, in order to keep Israels enemies at bay said: Israel must be a like a mad dog, too dangerous to bother. The proposed strategy by the general is apparently followed in letter and in spirit by successive Israeli governments. Unfortunately, Israel has been aided and abetted by the US. Resultantly, Israel cares two hoots about the rest of the world, even the UN. It amply demonstrated the same last week by assaulting Freedom Flotilla, killing and injuring numerous international aid workers. If that were not enough, a second aid-bearing ship Rachel Corrie, named after a US college student who was crushed to death by an Israeli army bulldozer while protesting against house demolitions in Gaza in 2003, was also stormed and boarded. In fact, Israel feels emboldened because the US blindly supports it in its entire belligerence, besides providing it with multi-billion dollars annual sustenance. This is a far cry from the thoughts presented by the founding fathers of the US. Benjamin Franklin, in his address at the 1789 Constitutional Convention Concerning Jewish immigration, made it amply clear: I warn you Gentlemen: If the Jews are not excluded forever from the United States by the Constitution, your children and your childrens children will curse you in your grave. Far from heeding these wise words, every US President is so tightly strait-jacketed in the web of Israeli controlled US economy, media and its politics that he dare not raise a finger of reproach. Take the case of the recent act of Israeli piracy in high seas, where it flouted Article 3 of the Rome Convention for the Suppression of Unlawful Acts against the Safety of Maritime Navigation of 1988, which states that it is an international crime for any person to seize or exercise control over a ship by force, and also a crime to injure or kill any person in the process. Ironically, this Act was adopted by the UN coming in the aftermath of the 1985 hijacking of Achille Lauro, in which four Palestinians hijacked the ship carrying Jewish passengers. They docked at Port Said in Egypt, where the hostages were released except for one, who had been killed and his body dumped in the sea. In exchange, the Egyptians permitted them to board a passenger aircraft for Tunis. Then US President Ronald Reagan scrambled F-14 Tomcat fighter aircraft from aboard a US aircraft carrier in the region, which intercepted the passenger airliner, forced it to land at Sigonella, a NATO base in Sicily. The four hijackers were arrested, tried and imprisoned. One of them, Abu Abbas, who managed to escape, was hunted down from Baghdad in 2003, after the invasion of Iraq and is now serving life imprisonment. Palestinian leader Yassir Arafat was made to pay $1.5 million as compensation to the family of the slain Jew. Such is the US law when it chooses to take action. Now Israel is indirect contravention of the same edict and has killed numerous innocent people in cold blood but the US has managed to ensure that it is not censured by the UN. Nor is there any remorse for the 1.5 million starving Palestinians, living under by Israels illegal blockade of Gaza. To make a mockery of its critics, Israel has decided to place nuclear weapons equipped Dolphin submarine in the Gulf. Previously, Haifa in the Mediterranean was the only Israeli submarine base but after having sent one Dolphin submarine to the Red Sea in June 2009, which the Israeli media interpreted as a warning to Iran, its navy decided in May 2010 to keep at least one submarine there permanently as a deterrent in response to rumoured ballistic missiles move from Syria to Lebanon. Each of Israels five Dolphin submarines has a crew of 35 to 50, capable of launching a nuclear cruise missile. The vessels can remain at sea for about 50 days and stay submerged up to 1,150ft below the surface for at least a week. The Dolphin submarines are among the most sophisticated and capable submarines in the world and are built in German shipyards. These submarines are designed for a variety of missions, including exposing and monitoring vessels and drowning them with underwater Torpedo missiles and over-the-horizon Harpoon missiles. Dolphin submarines are diesel-electric, but according to foreign reports, their offensive operational abilities have been enhanced by installing the Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) system, which make them as capable as nuclear submarines. Pakistan must be wary of the Israeli submarine in the Gulf since it is, as per reports, being logistically supported by Indians. God forbid if both India and Israel decide to target Pakistans nuclear installations, it would be in their range from the Indian Ocean. Next an American nuclear submarine is also operating in the Persian Gulf and was seen transiting the Straits of Hormuz. The Israeli news source, DEBKAfile, of May 20 indicates that the Obama administration had decided to boost the US military strength in the Mediterranean and Persian Gulf regions with additional air and naval strike forces. As a final word, Israel, with the US support, continues to behave like a mad dog; however, Pakistan must take cognisance of the threat emanating from its presence in the region. Its a fact that there is only one treatment for a mad dogput it to sleep The writer is a political and defence analyst.
