Political activities of different political parties’ candidates and their supporters have gained momentum with corner meetings and rallies for the second phase of the local bodies elections to be held on 19th.
According to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), Khanewal district is included in the 12 districts of Punjab where polling will be held on November 19. Some 14,058,500 voters registered in Attock, Chiniot, Gujranwala, Sheikhupura, Jhelum, Khanewal, Mandi Bahauddin, Mianwali, Sahiwal, Hafizabad, Toba Tek Singh and Sargodha will cast their votes in the polls. Khanewal district comprises four tehsils of Khanewal, Jahanian, Kabirwala and Mian Channu having population of about 2,060,000. The total number of voters in Khanewal district is 1,434,475 including 806,399 males and 628,076 females.
The male voters are 56% and female voters are 44%. District returning officers, returning officers and assistant returning officers have been named by the ECP for the purpose. One DRO, 25 ROs and 50 AROs will supervise the local government elections in 135 union councils of the district and 144 wards of six municipal committees.
According to the data provided by the election office, total polling stations in Khanewal district will be 1,076, bifurcated as 114 for male, 102 for females and 860 combined.
In these 1,076 polling stations, there will be 3,252 polling booths, 1,728 for male and 1524 for females. Election duties have been assigned to 1,076 presiding officers, 6,006 assistant presiding officers and 3,222 polling officers.
According to bifurcation of 135 union councils of the rural areas, 35 union councils fall in Khanewal tehsil, 18 in Jahanian, 46 in Kabirwala and 36 in Mian Channu.
Likewise, in six municipal committees of urban areas, there are 44 wards in the jurisdiction of municipal committee Khanewal, 20 in Mian Channu, 12 in Kabirwala, 15 in Talumba, 12 in Abdul Hakim and 11 in Jahanian.
Under the Punjab Local Government (Amendment) Ordinance 2015, a union council shall have a directly elected chairman and a vice-chairman as joint candidates, and six councillors on general seats - one from each ward.
In Khanewal district, 541 candidates are contesting for the 135 seats of 135 chairman /vice chairman of district council and 2,806 for the seats of councillors.
Similarly, 752 candidates are contesting for a total of 114 seats of councillors in all six municipal committees of Khanewal district.
