ISLAMABAD - As an acknowledgment of the proactive leadership and global efforts of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on the climate change action plan, the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) has announced to hand him over the vice-presidency of the conference.
Pakistan has got this global distinction out of the 195 members of the United Nations. The Presidency of the COP-27 is with Egypt which would also host this year summit.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi has also invited Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to jointly chair COP-27 meeting to be held in Sharm El-Sheikh on 6th November this year. Other than PM Shehbaz Sharif, the conference would be co-chaired by Norwegian Prime Minister and Egyptian President. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the Prime Minister of Norway and the Egyptian President will jointly chair the roundtable conference. The COP-27 meeting is beginning in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, from the 6th of next month which will be attended by world leaders, heads of governments and representatives of think-tanks and international financial institutions. Shehbaz Sharif has been entrusted the Vice Presidency for being an effective voice on climate change. The prime minister’s proposal for global cooperation in addressing the challenge of climate change had received endorsement by the SCO member countries. The SCO summit was held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan on September 15-16. In the wake of recent floods, the Prime Minister forcefully raised the issue of climate change at the SCO Summit and the 77th session of the UN General Assembly in New York. PM Shehbaz Sharif would again highlight the challenge of the climate change and its impact on developing countries.
