IHC moved against Justice (retd) Azmat’s appointment as Broadsheet Inquiry Commission chief

ISLAMABAD   -   A writ petition challenging the appointment of former Supreme Court judge Justice (retd) Sheikh Azmat Saeed as chairman of one-man Inquiry Commission for Broadsheet scam has been filed before the Islamabad High Court (IHC).

A single bench of IHC comprising Chief Justice of IHC Justice Athar Minallah will Friday (today) conduct hearing of the petition filed by a lawyer Saleemullah Khan in person.

The petitioner cited federation of Pakistan through Prime Minister, Justice (retd) Azmat Saeed, Supreme Judicial Council, Pakistan Bar Council and Supreme Court Bar Association as respondents.

He adopted that the Pakistan Commission of Inquiry Act, 2007 does not define the qualification criteria of the Chairman.

Therefore, it is not essential for the Chairman to be a former judge and just any citizen can be appointed as chairman or a member of the commission.

He stated that Azmat Saeed does not qualify for the judicial function he has been called upon to perform because he has served as the Deputy Prosecutor General of National Accountability Bureau (NAB) during the period of time when the fishy agreements were signed between NAB and the Broadsheet LLC while he was an active member of the five-member apex court bench which heard the highly politicised Panama Papers and disqualified Nawaz Sharif and Justice (retd) Azmat is till date a Governor in the Board of Governors of Shaukat Khanum Memorial Trust and Hospital headed by Imran Khan, the current Prime Minister of Pakistan.
